Simply the mechanism of action of the catalyst can be presented as follows. Change of energy of activation of reaction occurs due to formation by the catalyst K with one of reagents A of an intermediate compound AK:

A + K = AK (1)
AK + B = AB + K (2)

The overall reaction is

A + B = AB

But instead of an energy barrier of this reaction the lower barriers of reactions (1) and (2) have to be overcome: E1 and E2.
